Evey Choat, Ag Educator attends CASE Conference and Develops Soybean Curriculum for classroom through scholarship from the Nebraska Soybean Board.
Wayne, NE – Miss Evey Choat has completed a STEM based CASE (Curriculum for Agriculture Science Education) training. The CASE Food Science & Safety training provided curriculum to twenty agricultural education teachers from across the Midwest. McPherson County ag education teacher, Evey Choat, was one of these twenty educators. Through a scholarship provided by the Nebraska FFA Foundation and funded by the Nebraska Soybean Board, Choat is supplementing this STEM based curriculum by using soybeans as a model, focus and method for learning. This fall Miss Choat will be implementing this curriculum in her classroom by utilizing soybeans in various segments of the Food Science & Safety CASE curriculum.
Through her curriculum Miss Choat will be teaching her students about the process, benefits and challenges related to the use of soybeans in agriculture. She spent five days in Wayne in in-person training going through close to twenty labs and activities and learning a full semester of lessons and assessments. From going over the six parts of taste (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, savory and umami) to a lab using mass spectrometry to measure the polarity of sugars and sugar substitutes, the teachers at CASE engaged in hands-on learning that taught all aspects of food science and safety.
“I will implement this curriculum to facilitate hands-on, inquiry-based learning in my classroom. Students at McPherson County will learn valuable skills and strengthen their knowledge through this relevant curriculum” says Miss Choat.
Choat and McPherson County Schools were able to participate in this professional development as a result of a scholarship support from the 2023 Nebraska Soybean Checkoff Professional Development Scholarship. For more information about CASE and other Nebraska Agriculture Education teachers who have develop soybean curriculum for their agricultural education programs contact Stacey Agnew, Nebraska FFA Executive Director, at Stacey@neffafoundation.org.
